How to Repair Ceramic Fiber Modules – Can They Be Fixed by Yourself?

The repair of ceramic fiber modules depends on the degree of damage. Small-scale or localized issues can be handled by the user, while large-area or complex damage should be addressed by professional teams. Below are specific repair guidelines and precautions:

Common Damage Types and Repair Methods

1. Shrinkage Joint Cracks

ü Phenomenon: Gaps wider than 5mm, often caused by thermal expansion or material shrinkage.

ü Repair Steps:

Clean the gap thoroughly, ensuring it is dry and free of oil or debris.

Fill the gap with ceramic fiber blanket of the same grade as the original module, ensuring it reaches the bottom of the gap.

Compact the blanket firmly using a wooden hammer or special tool to avoid surface-only filling, which may cause secondary cracking.

2. Partial Detachment of Standard Modules

ü Phenomenon: One or several modules fall off due to loose anchoring or external impact.

ü Repair Steps:

Check the condition of the original anchoring pins; re-weld if they are loose.

Apply a layer of ceramic fiber blanket as backing in the detached area, with thickness equal to the original module.

Install a new module, align it with the anchoring pins, and tighten the nuts to ensure tight contact with the furnace wall.

Insert compressed ceramic fiber blanket between rows of modules (non-compression direction) to compensate for shrinkage gaps.

If gaps exceed 5mm, fill with ceramic fiber blanket and secure properly.

3. Detachment of Special-Shaped Modules (e.g., Corners, Arches)

ü Phenomenon: Modules with complex structures fall off due to stress concentration or improper installation.

ü Repair Steps:

Weld elongated anchoring pins that cover the damaged area and penetrate into the furnace wall.

Layer ceramic fiber blanket to the original design thickness, overlapping each layer in a staggered manner.

Cut ceramic fiber blanket pieces 10–15% larger than the damaged area, leaving compression allowance where they contact intact modules.

During compression and installation, ensure the blanket surface is flush with surrounding modules, avoiding bulges or depressions.
